AGM 2009 Update

The 43rd AGM was held on Sat Feb 28th 2009 in Forbairt na Rosann, Chapel Rd, Dungloe and once again had a very large attendance. The 2008 committee was returned unopposed with the exception of Club President who now is Eddie Sharkey. The election of Eddie as President was a very popular one and after his many years of hard work and commitment to the Rosses Anglers then it was well deserved and the club was delighted Eddie accepted the post. Many thanks to Bishop Seamus Hegarty the outgoing President. One other notable change was that John Paul Baska has replaced Charles Kennedy as Assistant Secretary. Charles has been an outstanding worker across various positions over the years and his work has been one of the fundamental reasons we have such an open, transparent, fluent and successful working club today so our heartfelt thanks for all his efforts. Indeed Charles will hardly be hanging up his boots and will always be available to lend advice and will continue to work behind the scenes in the many threats to our club, most notably the Gweebarra. The work of both John Boyle and Charles with the ongoing Gweebarra issue received a large round of applause by all and it was noted once again this year from the floor the amount of time and personal cost that both these club stalwarts put it. A big appreciation was also noted for all who supported this campaign throughout 2008 and continue to do so with the recognition that we need to keep focussed and stick together to beat this injustice.

Eddie Sweeney addressed the meeting after a very succesful first year as Chairman. If one can recall from Eddie's first speech in the chair Feb 2008 he talked of the fact that his was just one voice like everybody else's in the club and that democracy would rule the day in terms of decision making and his chairmanship for the year has echoed consistently of that. Such a smooth last year testifies to the excellent work that Eddie has done and all were happy to see Eddie returned unopposed. Eddie thanked all for their support throughout 2008 and he has high hopes of a very successful 2009.

The secretary's report was very well written and touched on the many aspects of the year such as a good summation of the Gweebarra issue, a Central and Regional Fisheries board update, Waskell Fishery update, Habitat Development where once again John Boyle received the deserved plaudits for his ongoing work on gravel disposition to improve the spawning beds. Added to that was a summary of the competitions for 2008 with a big congratulations again to John Thomas for winning the "big one" the boat competition. Sterling work by Margaret Boyle and Helen Sweeney in planning and organizing the Charity Competition that raised €2000 for many deserving causes was highlighted and these two ladies deserve so much recognition and appreciation.
June's report finished with the best wishes and tight lines for all in 2009 and all agreed that in her first year June has done an outstanding job as secretary

Daniel read out the Treasurer's report and reflected on a very successful financial year with the club in a very healthy position. Daniel noted the huge input by Eddie Sweeney in both coaching and help dealing with the financial aspects of the position throughout the year. Also noted was the very thorough and well maintained state the finances, paperwork and the overall process was left in which made the task of anybody taking on this position so straightforward. Some minor queries came from the floor and these appear to have been very satisfactorly dealt with.

In summary it was a very successful AGM. The uncontested officer positions again gave a huge vote of confidence to the new committee and gives a seal of approval to the direction the club has been pursuing over both the last few years and the years ahead. Many thanks to all who made this such a successful evening. A big thankyou to all the club members and all who helped throughout the year ranging from the excellent work by James & Sean McKenna with the boats, all who helped move the boats and all who contributed in competitions weigh-ins and generous sponsorship. For anybody I may have missed or any aspects I should have touched on then my sincere apologies.
Daniel Sweeney
