Latest Fishing Update - Feb 17th '08
The 2008 Trout Season opened on Friday 15th Feb but no reports of any local fishing in the Rosses as yet. Daniel Sweeney and Charles Kennedy spent a few hours fishing Lough Mask on Saturday 16th but with no success. A South East light wind was blowing and conditions were cold with just very small early hatches of Duck Fly in some of the shallows close to the shore. Approximately 20 boats were seen on the Lough in the Canal to Cushlough area and half of these were trawler men. By all accounts some trout were caught on the Friday with bags of 2 and 3 accounted for by some fortunate individuals.
First Salmon
The first Irish Salmon was caught on the Drowes River from the Money Hole at 12 noon on Saturday the 5th January. Weighing 13 lbs it surrendered to a black Flying ‘C’ spinner. The angler involved was Colin Gardiner from Lurgan, Co. Armagh who had also caught the first salmon in 2005.
First Waterville Salmon
The opening day of the new Salmon and Sea Trout season in Waterville was 17/1/08 on and Mr William Bowles of Cork caught the first Salmon of the 2008 season on the Famous Butler Pool.
